10 Essential Tips for First-Time Electric Scooter Riders

An electric scooter is one of the easiest ways to move through a city — but "easy" isn't the same as "automatic." A few basics make the difference between a confident rider and a nervous one.

Here are ten things worth knowing before your first real ride.

 1. Wear a Helmet — Every Time

Head injuries are the most common serious injury in scooter accidents, and they're the most preventable. A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable, even for a quick trip. Add gloves and knee pads if you're learning.

 2. Practise Somewhere Empty First

Before you touch traffic, spend 20 minutes in an empty car park or park. Get used to the throttle, the weight, and how the scooter turns at low speed. Give yourself room to make mistakes safely.

 3. Start in the Lowest Speed Mode

Every MOTORUN scooter has multiple speed modes. Start in the lowest and stay there until the controls feel natural. There's no prize for going fast on day one.

 4. Learn Where the Brakes Are — and Use Both

Front and rear brakes (and the electronic brake on our models) work together for the shortest, safest stops. Brake early and gently rather than hard and late, especially on wet ground.

 5. Understand Your Local Rules

Speed limits, where you can ride, whether a helmet is required, and whether insurance is mandatory — these differ by country and city. Know them before you ride. See our [City Guides](/blogs/city-guides) for the details.

 6. Check Your Scooter Before Every Ride

Sixty seconds of inspection prevents most problems: check tyre pressure, test the brakes, make sure the folding mechanism is locked, and confirm the battery has enough charge.

 7. Ride Predictably, Not Aggressively

Signal your turns, don't weave between cars, and give pedestrians space. On the road you're the smallest vehicle — being predictable keeps you safe.

 8. Look Further Ahead Than You Think

At speed, you need more stopping distance than a pedestrian. Scan 10–15 metres ahead for potholes, drain covers, wet metal and opening car doors.

 9. Care for the Battery From Day One

Charge in a dry, ventilated place. Let the battery cool after a long ride before charging. Avoid leaving it at 0% or 100% for long periods. Good habits now mean a healthier battery in two years.

 10. Give Yourself Time to Improve

Confidence comes from hours in the saddle, not from one afternoon. Start with short, familiar routes and build from there.

 Start Riding With Confidence

Every expert rider started exactly where you are. Take it slow, stay visible, follow the rules — and the city opens up.
