Electric Scooter Charging Safety: How to Charge Safely at Home

Lithium battery fires are rare, but when they happen they're serious — and almost every case traces back to the same handful of mistakes. Charging safely isn't complicated. It just needs a little discipline.

Here's how to do it right.

 The Golden Rules

 1. Use the charger that came with your scooter. Never use a third-party or mismatched charger. The supplied charger is matched to your battery's voltage and current. The wrong one can overcharge or damage cells. Using a non-approved charger also voids your warranty.

2. Never charge with wet hands or a wet port. Water plus electricity is a bad combination. If your scooter got rained on, dry the charging port completely before plugging in.

3. Charge in a dry, ventilated space. A hallway, garage or well-ventilated room is fine. Avoid enclosed cupboards, and never charge in a damp bathroom.

4. Keep it away from anything flammable. Not on a pile of clothes, not next to curtains, not under a wooden staircase. Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface.

5. Don't charge unattended overnight. This is the big one. Charge while you're awake and nearby, then unplug when it's done. Most incidents happen during unsupervised overnight charging.

6. Don't charge immediately after a long ride. Let the battery cool for 30 minutes first. Charging a hot battery stresses the cells.

7. Unplug when fully charged. Don't leave it on the charger for days. Once it's full, it's full.

 Warning Signs to Watch For

Stop charging immediately and contact us if you notice:

* The charger or battery getting unusually hot 
* A swelling  or bulging battery pack
* A burning or chemical smell 
* Hissing  or unusual noises
* The charger not cutting off when the battery is full

 What NOT to Do

* ❌ Don't use a damaged or cracked charger.
* ❌ Don't charge a battery that's been submerged or physically damaged.
* ❌ Don't try to open or repair the battery pack yourself.
* ❌ Don't charge in a place you can't monitor.
* ❌ Don't block escape routes with the scooter while charging.
