How to Ride and Store Your Electric Scooter in Winter

Winter is tough on electric scooters. Lithium batteries lose capacity in the cold, wet roads reduce grip, and dark mornings make visibility harder. None of it means you have to stop riding — you just need to adapt.

Here's how.

 Why Winter Affects Your Battery

Lithium-ion batteries work through a chemical reaction, and cold slows it down. Expect noticeably less range  in winter — often 10–20% less, and more in freezing conditions. This isn't a fault; it's physics.

What to do: 

* Charge indoors  at room temperature, never in a freezing garage or shed.
* Let the battery warm up  before charging — at least 30 minutes after coming in from the cold.
* Store between 40–60%  if you're not riding for weeks.
* Expect shorter rides  and plan your charging stops accordingly.

 Riding Safely in the Cold

1. Reduce your speed.  Cold tyres grip less. Corners and braking need more care.

2. Brake earlier and gentler.  Stopping distances lengthen on cold, damp or icy surfaces.

3. Watch for wet metal and painted lines.  Drain covers, tram tracks and road markings become genuinely slippery when wet.

4. Stay visible.  Winter means dark mornings and early evenings. Use your lights, and consider a reflective jacket or backpack cover.

5. Dress for the wind.  Cold wind at riding speed feels far worse than the temperature suggests. Gloves, a windproof layer and something covering your ears make a real difference.

 Protecting Your Scooter

* Wipe it down  after riding on wet or salted roads. Road salt is corrosive to metal parts.
* Keep the charging port dry.  Never charge with wet hands or a wet port — let it dry completely first.
* Store indoors  where possible. If you must store it outside, cover it and bring the battery inside if you can.
* Check tyre pressure more often.  Pressure drops faster in cold weather.

 When It's Too Cold to Ride

There's no shame in skipping a ride. On ice or in heavy snow, an e-scooter is genuinely dangerous — two small wheels and no traction. Use public transport on the worst days and save your scooter for when conditions improve.
